Teacher Discipline Tips For Every School

All it takes is one misguided teacher to allow a bad experience for all the students in your school. This does not only affect the children but also the teachers and the school administration. Here are some tips on how to handle your teacher:

It is better to choose a school with short-term consequences. For example, if your teacher is doing something to your child that can be termed as “instigating” the behavior of your child, you may wish to wait for some time and then make a statement to the school administration about the situation. Your complaint will be submitted and investigated by the school authorities. These school authorities will then inform the teacher and so he will either be given a warning or reprimand.

Keep all your contact with the teacher as a professional one. It is not possible for you to read the mind of a teacher. If you feel he is out of line and it is necessary to give your opinion about the behavior of your child towards the teacher, go ahead and do so in a clear and organized manner.

You should keep your grievances to yourself if your grievance is only of his own working procedure. It will help if you have had some training in such matters. However, you need to keep in mind that you cannot lay your grievances before the teacher. In case your school has no teachers’ union, you can always make use of this opportunity and create awareness among the teachers about the rights of the students and also your capacity to do so.

Once you have made your complaint to the school administration and the teacher has been reprimanded, you should establish good communication lines between the teacher and the school authorities. You can have a single phone call, a meeting or some other form of communication where the school administration and the teacher will be informed about the complaints.

When the teacher has been reprimanded, you can create an environment in the school where there will be no harassment or intimidation of the teacher against the students. For example, in the high school setting, you can tell the teachers that they should not initiate inappropriate contact with students or use violence when dealing with students.

You should set up a committee of the school administration, a parent and a student welfare officer to deal with the problems of the teacher. These members should be people who will understand the situation between the teacher and the students.

Take the support of the parents to ask the teacher to undergo behavioral training. There will be no way that he will comply to any kind of counseling if you do not call him personally.

Do not make an issue out of the fact that the school administrator is in charge of the school. You should make sure that you are well aware of the instructions of the school authorities.

Ensure that you do not ignore the teacher’s complaints. They will at some point make such a complaint. If you ignore it, you will at some point have to deal with the issue.

You should have the same view on the teaching of the subject as you do about general education. If the school administration allows the teacher to implement the curriculum without taking adequate time to work on the lessons, you should not let it slide.

If your school administration or school officials prevent you from disciplining your teacher, talk to them about your grievance. This will help you have a fair understanding of the work required in the classroom and how it should be dealt with.
